What is Multiple Chemical Sensitivity?

These days, many people have sensitivities to perfumes, hair sprays and and other scents.
Scents can be toxic and hard to escape if you are outside the home!
What’s Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS)?
According to MCSAware.org, “Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is a chronic, physical illness affecting people of all ages and backgrounds. It causes sufferers to have allergic-type reactions to very low levels of chemicals in everyday products. Put simply the immune and detoxification systems stop working properly and the body cannot process toxins efficiently“.
Exposure to fragrances or toxins can be debilitating and lead to headaches, allergies, nausea, disorientation, confusion, breathing problems, exhaustion, or muscle pains.
Those with multiple chemical sensitivities (MCS) sometimes find it difficult to visit places outside the home.
These places may include:
- Malls
- Grocery stores
- Movie theaters
- Restaurants
- Doctors offices
- Nail and hair salons
- Sporting events
- Churches
If toxic smells are an issue, it’s best to avoid them completely!
You can’t control outside factors, however, you can control what goes on inside your own home!
Here are 13 Ways to Control Toxic Scents in your Home!
Another situation that can get you into trouble is with people coming inside your home.
People who don’t suffer with allergies have no idea that the products they wear can be toxic to others!
Have you ever entertained guests that show up to all of your gatherings wearing a ton of perfume and then you hug them?
The scent can last on your clothes days after the gathering has ended.
You don’t want to have to avoid interacting with others, especially if you haven’t seen them for a very long time, but what can you do?
If you are expecting company or visitors, here are some suggestions:
- Advise repair persons, and realtors “in advance” of your sensitivity to perfumes and colognes and ask them to not wear them.
- Same goes if you are having party guests or a gathering at your house.
- If you send out invites, ask guests to refrain from wearing any scents because others may suffer from allergies.
- If you are expecting overnight house guests, prepare them in advance that you are highly sensitive to perfume, hairspray, hair gel, and scented soaps and deodorants.
It’s best to make your own environment more manageable if you suffer from allergies, because above all, your home is your safe haven.
In conclusion, if you are suffering with allergies or MCS, it’s best to contact your physician or allergist as soon as possible!
